Abstract

American artist Bruce Nauman (born 1941) is regarded as one of the most important artists working today. His pioneering explorations of sculpture, performance, sound, video and environments have influenced artists internationally for over three decades. Focusing upon the artist’s investigation into the human condition, Bruce Nauman: Make Me Think Me brings together a comprehensive selection of works from 1966-2005.The first half of the exhibition looks at the artist’s use of language through sculpture, sound, drawing, video and works in neon. Using multiple forms of wordplay – puns, palindromes, anagrams and repetition - Nauman questions the success and failure of one of the fundamental means of human interaction. Language is also used as a tool to control – we are invited to follow a series of instructions that direct our behaviour in the gallery. The works in the second half of the exhibition look at the body and physical behaviour, starting with a series of films the artist made of himself performing mundane, yet demanding, actions in his studio, and continuing with several environments, entered by the audience, that dictate our movement and reactions. In Corridor Installation (Nick Wilder Installation), the audience navigates a series of corridors in which our movement is controlled and recorded on CCTV cameras, often with perplexing results. The exhibition culminates with a selection of Nauman’s animal and head casts, including two large scale hanging sculptures made from taxidermists’ moulds. Also included is the recent Three Heads Fountain (Andrew, Juliet, Rinde) 2005 – a water fountain made from resin heads. These works represent some of Nauman’s most powerful assessments of human nature to date.

Abstract

"This publication combines the works of Belgian artist Philippe Vandenberg (1952-2009) and American artist Bruce Nauman (b. 1941). At first, it may seem startling to see Nauman's small but dense selection of works alongside those by Vandenberg. The artists never met one another and they could not be more different in their choice of artistic media. And yet there's something that links the oeuvre of these apparently divergent artists. This publication examines that extraordinary link. The art of both Vandenberg and Nauman is direct, uncompromising and distressing. They share a common attitude towards their artistic practices. Their works are raw and uncouth, finished just to the point where they enter the onlooker's consciousness as a kind of prelude or genesis to something." Exhibition: Gallery Sofie Van de Velde, Antwerp, Belgium (30.03. - 21.05.2017).

Abstract

Bruce Nauman is widely acknowledged as a central figure in contemporary art, and the stringent questioning of values --both aesthetic and moral-- that has long sustained his project remains urgent today. For more than fifty years, Nauman has explored how mutable experiences of time, space, sound, movement, and language provide an insecure foundation for our understanding of our place in the world. This richly illustrated catalogue, which includes rare and previously unpublished images, offers a comprehensive view of the artist's work in all media --including drawings; early fiberglass sculptures; sound environments; architecturally scaled, participatory constructions; rhythmically blinking neons; and a recent 3-D video that harks back to one of Nauman's earliest performances. A wide range of authors --artists, curators, and historians of art, architecture, and film-- focus on topics that have been largely neglected, such as the architectural structures that posit real or imaginary spaces as models for ethical inquiry and mechanisms of control. Curator Kathy Halbreich's introductory essay explores Nauman's many acts of disappearance, withdrawal, and deflection as revelatory of his central formal and intellectual concerns. Eighteen further contributions tease out the various themes that run through this protean and elusive artist's work.

Abstract

Merce Cunningham's dynamic artistic collaborations are the subject of a major interdisciplinary survey organized by the Walker, home to the complete scenic and costume archive of the Merce Cunningham Dance Company (MCDC). Renowned as both choreographer and dancer, Cunningham (American, 1919-2009) revolutionized dance through his partnerships with leading artists who created costumes, lighting, films, music, and décor and whose independent creative instincts he held in the highest regard. Common Time offers a journey through a range of experiential installations that unfold at the Walker in seven galleries, the theater, the cinema, and public spaces throughout the museum. Known for embracing risk and chance, Cunningham believed in the radical notion that movement, sound, and visual art could exist independently of each other, coming together only during the common time of a performance. The exhibition presents Cunninghams work and that of his network of collaborators through rare and never-before-seen moving image presentations and installations of décor and costumes from the MCDC Collection as well as pieces by his lifelong collaborator, composer John Cage, and Trisha Brown, Tacita Dean, Jasper Johns, Morris Graves, Robert Morris, Bruce Nauman, Isamu Noguchi, Nam June Paik, Yvonne Rainer, Robert Rauschenberg, Frank Stella, David Tudor, Stan VanDerBeek, Andy Warhol, and many others.
